South Caro lina officials report that about 1,000 acres of mountain land near Hogback has been burned in the past three days. Volunteer fire men are helping the wardens . . . The National Democratic conven tion seated the Virginia, Louisiana and South Carolina delegations about 2 o’clock this morning. All nominations have been made in cluding Russell, Kefaufer, Kerr, Stevenson, Harriman, Williams, Humphrey, Fulbright, D e v e r, Barkley, McMahon. Ballotting will ^J^gin today after the convention ' Acjns at 11 o’clock . . . Dr. Kerri '**<!& Juniper, who preaches his last sermon Sunday here at the Congregational Church Sunday morning says he has enjoyed his stay here during the vacation of the pastor, Rev. Orville White. His sermon subject Sunday will be “The Temptation of the Short Cut” .... About 100 cars were out on the Skyuka Road Sunday to "“fi the new development on Tryon Mountain where the Tryon Real Estate invites the public to view the scenery and offer suggestions for a name for the development. A total of $50 will be given to the winner or winners of the name chosen by the judges. Toni Costa -Continued on Back Page__ Polk County Girl Wins State Speaking Championship Miss Patricia Arledge of the Polk County 4-H Club, won first place in the state speaking contest Thursday afternoon at Raleigh, ac cording to information received by County Agent Paul Culberson. Miss Arledge has addressed a num ber of civic clubs and political groups in the county and was selected as Miss Polk County in the Winthrop College newspaper high school edition this year. She was selected from the Green Creek school on the basis of per sonality, scholarship, leadership, et cetera. (Other members of the Polk County -4-H Club attending the meeting in Raleigh with Assistant Home Agt. Miss Elizabeth Wright, were Alfred Stott, Lawrence Rol lins. Russell Pack, Rachel Horne, Libby Jack, Mary Jo Richey, Carol Foster. Miss Arledge will receive a set of silver and a free trip to Chicago. DISTRICT MASONS TO MEET MONDAY Brevard, July 22,—The annual district meeting of the Masons in the 38th district will be held here in Brevard at the new Masonic temple on East Main Street on Mondav, Julv 28th. The local Dunn’s Rock lodge will be host to representatives from the Saluda lodge at S*aluda, the Kedronn.lodsre, Hendersonville, and the Jeff L. Kelson lodge at Tryon. According to Ernest H.
